Phlebotomist - Float - Full Time - Lab Services

Clyde, OH

The basic functions of the Phlebotomist are to accurately collect and process appropriate patient samples for diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease. 36-40 hours per week, will have a base location, and be assigned as coverage is needed at other NOMS offices, must use own transportation when travel is necessary.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Positively identify the patient using two identifiers per policy before venipuncture is performed.
  • Perform venipuncture and skin punctures competently and expediently. Has thorough knowledge of testing requirements.
  • Instruct patients in a sensitive and understandable way on the proper collection of urine samples.
  • Ability to operate laboratory centrifuges and to perform a variety of blood collection techniques.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of color top tube to use, volume of blood needed and testing requirements.
  • Correctly label and process all specimens as required, before sending to the lab.
  • Demonstrate the ability to use electronic medical recording keeping requirements.
  • Follow universal procedures at all times. Dispose all sharp instruments in a rigid sharp container.
  • Ensure adequate level of supplies are stocked based on anticipated needs. Ensure the work area is properly stocked and maintain an accurate inventory order. Order supplies as needed.

Knowledge and Skills Required:

  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with physicians, patients, employees, and the public.
  • Ability to do detailed and accurate work. Organizational skills and attention to detail. Utilizes time management skills.
  • Problem solving, critical thinking and troubleshooting skills.
  • Read, understand, and follow oral and written instructions. Possess good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Recognize, evaluate, solve problems and correct errors.
  • Maintain productivity and work independently.

Education and Work Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent - 1 year of phlebotomy experience preferred.
  • Medical Assistant or phlebotomy certification required
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) preferred
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) preferred

Environmental/Working Conditions:

  • Working in a physician office laboratory. Work may be stressful. Interaction with others may be constant and interruptive. Possible exposure to communicable disease, toxic substances and other conditions common to a laboratory environment.

Physical/Mental Demands:

  • Possess the ability to lift 40 lbs. Involves substantial standing and walking, stooping and bending. Requires ability to see test readings and good eye/hand coordination. Cannot be color blind.
